Work..Work..Work

After nice weekend, awesome match (SA V’s Australia), hectic weekday started. Day started by reaching the office by 9AM and ended by reaching home by 11 PM. As we have the checkpoint review for CMMI, loads of work to do. Half of the day is wasted with those things. Very critical and high priority tasks in hand. Not getting any clue to resolve the issues? But anyways these kind of tasks are not new for us. Need to do some brainstorming with my other team leads.

As per my weekly planning, am supposed to complete the loan app by today. Not yet completed. Half the way. Now I will finish the other half and then go to sleep. Procrastination is sin.

Hi Anu,

I appreciate ur boldness which I c in ur decisons.
But I have few qtns for U ! Have u ever come accross these words of Alex (C++).

“Viewing promotion path as your career” is a completely wrong goal. If you are really interested in studying and learning new things,

never ever aspire for being a manager. Managers cannot learn and study...they have no time. “Company ladder aspiration” is not what

should be important for you.

- You might feel that you want to do certain things which you cannot do till you become a manager. When you become a manager,

you will soon realize that now you just cannot do anything!

- You will have a great experience as programmers. But if you care for people and love people, you will never enjoy being a

manager...most good managers are reluctant managers. If you see people as people, you cannot survive at management level.

- Always aspire for professional greatness. Our profession is very beautiful because we create abstract models and implement them in

reality. There is a big fun in doing that. We have a profession which allows us to do creative things and even gives nice salary for that.

- The three biggest mistakes that people usually make are aiming for money, aiming for promotion and aiming for fame. The moment

you get some of these, you aspire for some more...and then there is no end. I donot mean that you shouldnot earn money, but you

should understand how much money would satisfy your needs. Bill Clinton might be the richest person in the world; he is certainly not

the happiest. Our lives are far better than his.

1.As far as I know Managment is some sort of make-up to our original nature . Having a technical background y did u choose this

management? As far as I am concern, managers will never do anything constructive. They are busy in make-up'ing them with all

non-senses like....trying to be cheerful all the times though they are not really, making people to work ( U need two tounges here

)....etc.etc....and some other. In this battle for existence as a manager..u will loose many things which u respect now ( for sure u have to face situations of unfair play by urself, though u knew it is ).

2. U may need to move to overseas....visit there frequently....stay with others......party frequntly ( to maintain relationships, this is wat bussiness is all about) etc......which we indians are never comfortable about !

All these questions are just out of curiosity..........u may reply if u r comfortable....or else....consider this as just FYI........

Thanks,
Third EYE.

Sorry for the late reply Mr. THIRD EYE. Firstly I appreciate you for your concern and for taking some time to write such a big comment. I liked ur very frank comments and everything about you except the anonymous part. I guess this should be my Engineering classmate who knows me very well. Anyways it’s up to you to reveal your name or not.

Now coming to your Questions. Here are my opinions:

There are actually three stages in anybody’s life. Dependent, independent and interdependent. I say the same as Doer, Manager and leader. I wanted to see myself as a successful leader after some point of time in my career. But then, I can’t jump straight away to a leader. There is a stage called Manager in between to become a leader. Let us take one day at a time.

What is the difference between an Engineer and Manager? I wud say An Engineer need to be intelligent, but a manager need to be smart. When I say management I just don’t mean middle level management. It can be higher-level management too.

The way we see the problem is THE PROBLEM.

The three biggest mistakes? Money, fame and promotion. I don’t want to be rude. But just very very curious to know what do one want in life other than fame? Money and promotion are just the needs. If one doesn’t need fame what is the meaning of life? Why are we living? What for? What is the difference between you and any other techie sitting next to you?

I don’t mean to say our profession is not great. We are creating abstract models and implementing them. But then, why don’t you think about going an extra mile and dealing the same with people.

I agree that our lives are far better than Bill Clinton’s lives. And yes, at the same time an uneducated hardworking labors are happier than what we are. It’s just that as one grows in life, his/her responsibility increases. It’s the FACT. What do u say?

Will take a simple example. Let us take an unmarried girl, who stays with her parents. She will not have any responsibilities other than house work/job work. But once she gets married, she will be the responsible person for her whole family. Though she gets hurt, she just moves on with a smile on her face. That is LIFE.

If I keep on talking about this. I guess I will take days together. Hey! If u r still interested just send me a mail. If you don’t want to reveal your identity still you are welcome. I am ready to share my views with you.

Anu,

Thanks for ur prompt reply !
Once I am thru ur lines "If one doesn’t need fame what is the meaning of life?", I understood that u r already a manger just short of an MBA degree. I never work things in that way, I do it for myself. Going with an example ( following U) , we solve issues here and once it is done that will be credited on ur name . Mothly I solve atleast 5 issues and mostly 3 of them will be credited on my team mates name as 2 issues is mandatory for every person. I give my resolved issues to others who are in short of, and that gives me immense pleassure. I never work for fame. As far as I am concerned.......self-happiness is wat always that matters for me. I know wat I am, and the person who sits behind me ??........ I am least bothered about him or to make him know.....what I am !!

As by ur saying....it's the way we look at it..........I look at life staying at this dimension and u do it other way.
Any ways........all the best for ur future............may the supreme power (if it exists) shower u wat all u want !!

Thanks,
Third EYE.

Third Eye,
Being a team lead I have more consideration towards my fellow employees. Though I have finished many critical tasks, reported to my OC as if my fellow team members did that. Ofcourse that gives immense pleasure. But then, crediting many tasks under your name will NOT give you fame. Using FAME under this context is not proper. It’s just that you are limiting your potential to a lower bound.

Anyways our perspectives are totally different. But as a very good friend I wanted to suggest you something. This is a HIGHLY competitive world. If we just stay at what we are, then there will be n(n+1) people running ahead of us. Right now you may not understand what I am saying. But please think about it. Hope you take my suggestion in a positive sense.
